A Fractal Vegetable?
Here’s my spoils from the markets last week. One beautiful bunch of dahlias, a strange vegetable, and a bag of marroni or, in English, roasted chestnuts.
A work colleague informed me that marroni are only available in the Autumn, so I felt I should give them a try. They come in these little paper bags with a handy pouch for the empty shells. I can’t say I’m a big fan of the taste - kind of bland but with a soft, powdery texture. And definitely better hot!
The best thing though was the “fractal vegetable” as I am calling it. Hopefully the picture comes out well (I seem to be having trouble posting pictures without losing their quality at the moment). I think in German it is called Romanesca. It is kind of like cauliflower, but tastes better and well, it just looks trippy. If you don’t like the taste it will serve as excellent ornamentation in the kitchen! At least for a week or so before it goes brown and yukky… It’s a vegetable, no wait a math lesson, oh my goodness… it’s both! (Forgive me it’s past my bedtime.)
